Belonging

Social Connection

Strong relationships are one of the most powerful predictors of long, healthy life.

Decades of research — including the 85-year Harvard Study of Adult Development — show that quality of relationships predicts health and happiness more reliably than income, fame, or genetics.

Loneliness raises mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Belonging is medicine.

Daily practices

  • Share at least one meal a day with someone you care about.
  • Call a friend or family member you have not spoken to in a month.
  • Join a recurring group — class, club, faith community, hobby — that meets weekly.
  • Practice deep listening: put the phone down, look up, ask one more question.
