Forget juice cleanses. The most evidence-rich 'detox food' is the humble cruciferous vegetable — and broccoli leads the family.

Sulforaphane

Formed when raw or lightly cooked broccoli is chewed or chopped. Activates Nrf2, the body's master antioxidant pathway.

How to eat

Steam 4–5 minutes (max sulforaphane), or sauté florets quickly. Broccoli sprouts are by far the richest source — 1–2 Tbsp on salads or grain bowls is enough.

Cautions

Very large amounts in those with thyroid issues may interact with medication; cooking reduces this effect.
