Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change its structure and function in response to experience — forming new synapses, pruning unused ones, and even growing new neurons in the hippocampus. It continues throughout life. It is amplified by aerobic exercise (which raises BDNF), sleep (which consolidates learning), effortful practice of new skills, novelty, and social interaction. It is dampened by chronic stress, sleep loss, ultra-processed diet, isolation, and passive screen time. The habits that grow a plastic brain are much like the habits that grow a good life.
What is it?
Neuroplasticity includes synaptic plasticity (strengthening connections) and structural plasticity (new dendrites, new neurons).
Why it matters
It underlies all learning, recovery from injury, and adaptation to change.
