What Figs Is

Figs

Figs (Ficus carica) have been cultivated on the Iranian plateau for over five thousand years. Fresh figs (anjir tāzeh) arrive in late summer, dried figs (anjir khoshk) through the winter, and both deliver a rare density of fibre, potassium, calcium, and magnesium along with the honey-sweetness that gave the fig its Qur'anic and Biblical status as a sacred fruit. The classical Persian breakfast of soaked figs on an empty stomach is one of the oldest documented remedies for constipation in continuous household use.

Known to botanists as Ficus carica.
