Historical observation · Persian medicine

"Saffron gladdens the heart and comforts the vital spirit."

Persian physicians did not measure mood with questionnaires. They watched people over weeks and months, and they noticed that a pinch of saffron in warm milk seemed to lift the spirits of someone who had been sitting quietly by the window for too long.

In the historical texts, saffron was recommended for what the Hakims called heavy heart and grief that will not lift — described as a warm, opening spice for the chest and the spirit.

"It gladdens the heart and comforts the vital spirit."
— Avicenna, Canon of Medicine, c. 1025 CE

This is a historical observation from Persian medicine. It is not a modern clinical finding.
